Works in progress, 1991 [videorecording] / Jem Cohen. [1991]

This compilation of works-in-progress by Jem Cohen includes five film and video pieces in various stages of completion. Black hole radio is an incomplete video installation based on "confession lines" that allow people to confess anonymously over the telephone while others pay a fee to listen. The soundtrack was made from recordings of anonymous callers confessing adultery, theft, and other regrets over a two year period. Drink deep is a video artwork, very near completion, shot primarily at the Apalachee shoals in Georgia. In Cohen's words, it is "a little piece about swimming holes; dogs and rocks and always water; taking off your clothes; the sun flashing pictures in the skull behind your eye. Stories just submerged" (cf. letter from Cohen to Michael Nash, 1991). Among the works-in-progress are three music videos. At the rough-cut stage, Miss Mary is an alternative music video done with singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt. Flat Duo Jets document is the extended version of a rockabilly music video. Belong, featuring R.E.M., is a personal cut of concert footage and super 8 mm. film made by Cohen "for memory's sake" (cf. letter from Cohen to Michael Nash, 1991).
